Stunning Coastal Highlights of NZ’s South Island

See kiwi birds, a pretty lakeside church, Maori rock art and much more as you traverse the South Island’s southeast coast.

About Your Trip

Delve into the culture, history, heritage and landscapes of New Zealand on this 6-day adventure along the coast of the South Island from Christchurch to Dunedin. You’ll start at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, home to kiwis, iguanas and lemurs. In Lake Tekapo, you’ll disembark on its shoreline to visit one of the most photographed churches in New Zealand! Continuing south, stop at a glacial lake with a family-owned store that offers fresh salmon, followed by a visit to a colonial-era-inspired town that’s set in an 1882 grain store.

While in Dunedin, you’ll have a full day to explore this incredible place on your own. The city boasts striking Edwardian and Victorian architecture — it’s beautiful evidence of the gold rush era of the 1860s. Popular attractions include Larnach Castle, University of Otago’s clock tower and First Church of Otago, all of which were built in the late 1800s. After overnighting in Dunedin, and on the way back to Christchurch, you’ll spend time at a beach with unique large boulders and learn about rock art from the Maori culture that dates 500 to 700 years ago.

What we love:
• What makes Church of Good Shepherd so appealing for photographers is its secluded setting on a picturesque lake with mountains as the backdrop.
• The Scenic Hotel Southern Cross, Dunedin features the Dunedin Casino, where guests are invited to play Caribbean Stud Poker, Baccarat, Blackjack, Texas Hold’em, Roulette and electronic gaming machines.
• The giant, spherical Moeraki Boulders, mysteriously identical in size and shape, are scattered along the beach in clusters or alone — another popular spot for photography.

Destination

Due to its remoteness, New Zealand was one of the last major terrains to be settled by humans and developed a unique biodiversity of flora and fauna over its long period of isolation. Comprised of 2 long and narrow landmasses and numerous outlying islands, the country possesses huge amounts of southwestern Pacific coastline and extensive marine resources. Early Polynesian inhabitants spawned a distinctive culture known as the Maori, with its own language, mythology and arts.

While most New Zealanders now live in cities, the country’s art still heavily revolves around rural and indigenous themes. Visitors looking for warmer temperatures and beach time gravitate toward the North Island, as well as those drawn to the native Maori culture. The larger but less populous South Island is excellent for travelers interested in adventure sports or just getting away from it all.

Thanks to its ideal wine climate, the country is known for notably full-bodied Pinot Noir along with what many wine enthusiasts consider the world’s best Sauvignon Blanc. With a Pacific Rim cuisine influenced by Europe, Asia and Polynesia, the New Zealand way of eating — laid-back and as unaffected as possible — is more distinct than the food itself.
